3 liters, 5 liters, 8 liters

You have a 3 liter bowl, a 5 liter bowl and an 8 liter bowl, the last of which is filled with water. How can you measure exactly 4 liters of water, without spilling any of it around.

Call the 3 liter bowl “small”, the 5 liter bowl “medium” and the 8 liter bowl “big”. Now do the following:

  • Pour 5 liters from the big bowl into the medium bowl.
  • Pour 3 liters from the medium bowl into the small bowl.
  • Pour 3 liters from the small bowl into the big bowl.
  • Pour 2 liters from the medium bowl into the small bowl.
  • Pour 5 liters from the big bowl into the medium bowl.
  • Pour 1 liter from the medium bowl into the small bowl.

Now there are exactly 4 liters of water in the medium bowl.
